Bordeaux, St Michel

Bordeaux, Basilica of St Michel


Bordeaux –  45 minute drive from Castets en Dorthe. Visit this historical town by tram, on foot or take a guided tour to admire the different quartiers, its art galeries, museums, Pey-Berland Tour, Saint André Cathedral, Saint Michel Church and the daily market that surrounds it, not to mention wine tasting and the gastronomic restaurants.

Bassin d’Arcachon – 90 minute drive.  It offers you the choice of 70 km beaches; ocean and the fresh water lake of Cazaux with numerous water activities or why not climb the 104 metre high Dune du Pilat.

St Emilion – 45 minute drive. Visit its Monolithic church, catacombs and cloisters before tasting the numerous wines on offer. The little tourist  train allows you to visit the chateaux and vineyards at your ease.

  • Every Friday from 8 May – 23 October – the Tourist Office proposes a day of discovery of St Emilion and its vineyards with a picnic on a wine property accompanied the wine-maker.
Saint Macaire

Saint Macaire, historic town centre

St Macaire – 10 minute drive. A medieval town perched on a hill, protected by ramparts and fortified gateways. Its old town centre has been well preserved as a heritage area with tourist information centre..

Bazas – 15 minute drive. The most magnificent cathedral dominates this small town where there are often concerts. There is a market every Saturday morning.  This area is well renowned for it high quality beef and the Fêtes des Boeufs Gras.

Langon – 15 minute drive. This town sits on the Garonne River  and lies at the edge of the Sauternes and Graves region with an enormous number of chateaux just waiting for you to go and taste their wines.

  • On Friday and Sunday mornings there is a food market selling fresh local produce.

St Croix du Mont – 15 minute drive. Famous for its sweet white wine.

Verdelais – 15 minute drive. A magnificent basilica dominates this village. Across from the church you can follow the Calvary road past the stations of the Cross till you come to the 3 crucifictions overlooking the Entre Deux Mers. On your way you pass the cemetary where Toulouse-Lautrec lies buried. Not far away is the Château de Malromé where he spent the last days of his life.

Spa and Golf – A 25 minute drive takes you to a spa at Castets Casteljaloux and just 5 minutes drive away from Castets en Dorthe is an 18-hole golf course.

Fine Wines – We are within easy access of the 5 wine areas; Médoc, Côtes de Blaye and de Bourg, St Emilion and Libournais, Entre-deux- Mers, Graves and Sauternais all with wines to suit every palate.
